The story board that I will be using I believe will be ARCgis onlines storyboard software as I am familar with it this is the story as it sits now So I will start with a short anecdote from someone I know about a unnamed healthcare company in Ohio

In Ohio and especially rural Ohio there are many problems that are seen everyday from the opiod epidemic to the mafias but one problem that is critical is healthcare access. In Ohio many counties do not have hospitals or adequte access to primary care providers this is what a primary care provider once told me about their company. Jane Doe asked the X company why they do not open a clinic where Jane Doe is from. The area does not have a clinic and has maybe three primary care providers in the town with no hospitals closer that a 20 to 30 minute drive and primary care providers at least the same difference. Jane Doe said the answer they gave her was that people from that town were already driving up to 30 minutes to come see them why would they spend the money to put a clinic or primary care facility there and move the clientel already coming to them somewhere else when the return on investment may not be there.

This is the problem many counties face this is not an Ohio problem either it happens all over the bottom line is keeping as many people in a location as they can and only breaking into a new area if that area is unwilling to make the long drive to them. The graphic below shows how many hospitals are in each county in Ohio.

Their are eleven counties in Ohio without a hospital. Some of these counties have a rural clinic but what happens if you only have that and your in a bad accident or you are in a hunting accident? People lose their lives from not having adequte access to a hospital it happens all the time and those counties in particular are at risk but so are a lot more in the state.

For the final part im building a graphic that has a network analysis of travel times to hospitals it is not done yet but it will push the point about how many people are far from hospitals

We see here that about #percent of Ohio by area cannot reach a hospital in 30 minutes. That is # amount of people who are at risk from not having adequte access to healthcare

Outside of hospitals many counties as talked a bit about above do not have access to many healthcare providers at all. They do not even have access to primary care physicians. Data from Countyhealthrankings.org shows that six counties in Ohio have less than four primary care physicians those counties being Morgan, Noble, Monroe, Vinton, Harrison, and Meigs. Counties like meigs have been estimated to have lost nearly 20 thousand years worth of life this suggests a systemic problem when a county of 13 thousand is estimated to be this bad in healthcare.

When it comes to the split between spending in counties between rural and urban we can look at a few different things but the first thing is spending per person on medical expenses between rural and urban countiesScreenshot 2026-04-16 001832

This shows us there is not a large discrepency between personal medical spending and county type. This would suggest the problem might not be with this but could the problem be population size in a graph I have not made yet ill argue no this is not why

Then Ill wrap up the story board and show locations where hospitals should be added and not hospitals rural health clinics

User research

Target audience

My target audience for this project is law makers in Ohio. Lawmakers in Ohio are the ones who have the power to make the chages and to provide more access to the healthcare resources they need. The story at the begining to to reinforce that people in the field see there is a problem and it needs solved but the bottom line of the hospitals can get in the way of what people need. So this would be for the legislators of my state as every county is not created equal in Ohio when it comes to healthcare in Ohio.

Goal Questions to Ask
Find what worked well What do you like
Find what needs to be eliminated Is there anything that needs addressed and chagned
Find out if people liked the story idea What do you think of this story to begin

Questions Interview 1 early 20’s Heinz student PPM Interview 2 Ealy 20’s Heinz student PPM? Interview 3 Early 20’s Heinz student MISM
Question you asked here Insightful feedback
Q1 They said that they liked the story element of begining with talking about someone in the field they liked the idea to include primary care numbers I added this from feedback from part 1 They though the split bar graph was a cool addition but needed work especially with the labeling
Q2 I was not fully done with part two at this point so they said I should work on the map that I have above They thought the titles I was using so far for graphs needed work and similar said I should make changes to other features of the bar graph They liked my idea for the time based distance from hospitals they gave me some of their ideas on what that could look like (I have no idea how to do what they said but it sounded really cool) Ran out of time to ask more than one question to this person

Identified changes for Part III

Document the changes you plan on implementing next week to address any issues identified.

Research synthesis Anticipated changes for Part III
Findings or observations from interviews Describe what, if any changes you anticipate making to address the observation.
The graphs I showed them were promising but needed quite a bit of work Change my graph and get people to look at them more The story was a good add
the story was an idea I was pitching when iterviewing talking about adding it so I added it above now I think Ill get feedback from other people on what they think about it. Need to decide if the maps are good visuals I think the maps are good but Im going to try to figure out how to condese them or make them more meaninful

I think the interviewees had good insights I did not get much time to talk to them about my stuff specifically as it was in a weird stage of being partially done at the time but I think im enjoying the direction this is going and going to overhaul it for the final part
